Music

Intent

At St Mary Magdalen’s, the intention is that all children gain a good understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We believe that singing is a golden thread that helps to ensure the skills learnt are embedded.  Skills are built upon from Reception to Year 6, building on each strand throughout each year. Our objective is to develop the confidence and curiosity of the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the importance of many types of music. The children will therefore have an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed. We are passionate about ensuring children are able to understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts, including performance and leading to potential careers and employment within music.
