English

Intent

At St. Mary Magdalen’s, we believe that learning is an alteration to long term memory: the long-term retention of knowledge with the ability to transfer it to new contexts. We ensure that children have opportunities to revisit prior learning in a carefully planned sequence of daily teaching including phonics, reading and grammar. This provides pupils with the opportunity to reflect and build upon prior knowledge as they immerse themselves in a rich English curriculum.

Through the delivery of the English curriculum, our intention is to ensure pupils develop the necessary skills and knowledge to engage in the world around them as lifelong learners. We aim to immerse all pupils in high-quality texts to foster a love for reading and passion for learning which fuels their imagination. We strive to ensure that all pupils are given a learning experience which is well-rounded and equips them to be a successful learner in St. Mary Magdalen’s.

Aims:

  • To ensure that every child becomes a confident speaker, reader and writer by the time they leave St. Mary Magdalen’s RC Primary School
  • To instil a love for reading high-quality texts into pupils at all ages
  • To deliver a carefully planned English curriculum, which develops the progression of skills and knowledge in line with National Curriculum expectations and provides children with the opportunity to develop their cultural capital of the world around them.

Children will develop an understanding about other cultures around the world; they will learn about different time periods and further develop cultural capital by learning about significant others through the varied and progressive texts that are used within the classroom, particularly through whole class reading.
